EAST BERKSHIRE, Vt. — The small municipal water system serving East Berkshire remains a significant piece of infrastructure for the village, with the East Berkshire Fire District No. 1 continuing work related to its water system and service lines.

The district owns and operates East Berkshire’s municipal water system and is governed separately through a Prudential Committee. Town records list a service-line replacement construction contract among the district’s current documents.

The district reported that the East Berkshire water system was not under a boil-water notice as of May 28, the latest such notice posted on the town website.

The Prudential Committee normally meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 2839 Vermont Route 105. Olivia Savard is listed as chair, Kamar Simmons as vice chair and Diana Marrier as a committee member as well as district treasurer and clerk. Two committee positions are currently listed as vacant.

Water infrastructure has become an increasingly important issue for small Vermont communities as aging pipes and federal drinking-water requirements force systems to identify and replace problematic service lines.

East Berkshire’s system is particularly significant because the village is an unincorporated community rather than a separate municipality. The fire district provides the organizational structure through which the village’s public water system is operated.

Residents served by the system can follow upcoming agendas and district records through the Town of Berkshire website.
